John Lord letter : Shanghai, China, to John C. Kimball : ALS, 1851 April 17.

In a letter to John C. Kimball in Ipswitch, Mass, John Lord Jr. writes from Shanghai about what has passed since he set sail from Boston in the ship Reindeer on Nov. 22, 1849. He writes of the voyage, including seeing Cape Horn and the Andes, and describes San Francisco: his work as a Custom House officer, Mission Dolores, the Presidio, gambling houses and other entertainments in detail. He next writes of the Sandwich Islands, a violent storm on the next leg of the voyage, being towed into Manila, continuing on to Hong Kong, and arriving at Shanghai. He gives explicit instructions about how to letters should be mailed to him and to Joe Lord in Shanghai, care of Heard & Co. or Bush & Co.
